WATER IS OUR RIGHT CLEAN WATER PROGRAM
Access to clean water is essential to our mission of long-term, community-led development. Through our Water is Our Right program, we drill deep, closed-system wells that tap into naturally filtered aquifers— most fitted with hand pumps serving 300 + people. In 2023, we expanded to include solarpowered systems that deliver running water to schools. All systems are maintained by trained local water committees with ongoing support from Sonder staff.
In 2024, we introduced new strategies and partnerships to enhance the reliability and reach of clean water access. Key highlights include:
Restoring Access in Malawi: Our First Well Rehabilitation
While we have traditionally focused on drilling new wells in communities without access to clean water, this year we expanded our approach. In response to a request from the Ministry of Water & Sanitation in Malawi’ s Kasungu District— where roughly 30 % of wells are non-functional— we partnered with the ministry and the community of Mthiko to rehabilitate a broken well. The result: clean water access restored for 250 people.
Members of the Water Leadership Committee participate in the rehabilitation of the well in Mthiko.
