Stephen Joshua Sondheim, born March 22, 1930, New York City, New York.

An American composer and lyricist.

Mentored by Oscar Hammerstein II, who became like a surrogate father to Sondheim following his parent's divorce

Notable works include: A Funny Thing Happened on

the Way to the Forum, Company, A Little Night Music, Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street, Sunday in the Park with George, and Into the Woods.

Notable honours & awards include: an Academy Award for Best Song, eight Tony Awards including the Special Tony Award for Lifetime Achievement in the Theatre, eight Grammy Awards, and a Pulitzer Prize in Drama as well as several Grammy, Drama Desk, and Laurence Olivier Awards.
