Government thus bears the onus of creating an awareness to reduce the obsession of Indians with gold. This may be a great leap forward, but a truly economic change can only be effected only when it brings about a socio-economic change and even more, a change in the mind-set and perceived misconception of people. The common man has still not been able to relate much with Gold ETFs and other gold deposit schemes. However, SEBI has recently relaxed norms for gold deposit schemes in its attempt to unfreeze the idle gold in the economy. The business of gold is largely unorganized and naturally is associated with black money. A clever tax policy and surveillance strategy in place will help make the transaction of gold more transparent.
