THE SCORE ’ S GUIDE TO

GENELEC MONITORS PART ONE : 8000 SERIES

First unveiled in 2005 , Genelec ’ s classic 8000 series nearfield monitors are still hugely popular , combining true reference quality with a compact footprint and simple analogue connectivity .
In the 15 + years since their introduction , the 8000 series models have become an industry standard in rooms right across the globe , helping engineers and creatives produce accurate mixes that translate consistently to other rooms and systems .
And they still remain a true disruptor in the studio monitor world . Amongst a sea of regular MDF wooden boxes , the uniquely smooth curves of the 8000 series ’ recycled aluminium MDE ( Minimum Diffraction Enclosure ) combines aesthetic beauty with real acoustic benefits – since the curved cabinet reduces diffractions and secondary reflections , producing very clean and transparent reproduction even in challenging rooms .
The MDE also features the DCW ( Directivity Control Waveguide ), which produces very consistent performance both on and off axis , resulting in a wide and consistent sweet spot . This means you can still make accurate decisions when moving around the console / control surface , or reaching over to make keyboard or outboard adjustments .
Meet the family
Comprising five models , the 8000 series of two-way nearfield designs range from the super compact 8010 to the powerful 8050 . Each one is an active design , so features two independent internal amplifiers – one for each driver . As you progress up the range from 8010 to 8050 , each successive model delivers higher SPL and more low frequency extension .
To decide which model is best for you , don ’ t focus on driver size and amplifier power – but decide what listening distance you ’ ll be working at , and how loud you need to monitor at ( i . e . the SPL figure in dB ). You can then use the handy tables at www . genelec . com / correct-monitors to see which models are appropriate , and then the type of work you do and size of your room will help guide you further . For instance , someone working with electronic dance music will probably require a model with more low frequency extension and max SPL than someone working with acoustic instruments .
Irrespective of the model chosen , each of the 8000 series will allow you to monitor at relatively short distances , and this will let you hear more of the direct sound from the monitor , and less of the reflected ( and therefore coloured ) sound from the room itself . Be aware that the further you sit from the monitor , the more influence the room
