Do you remember the Banshe ’ s call in Denis Villeneuve ’ s Dune ? The chilling clarion call of the Bene Gesserit that swallows the dark sky as Arrakeen burns ? If not , I cannot recommend that sound ( and that film ) enough .
That darkly operatic call was sung into it ’ s intimidating life by vocal percussionist Loire Cotler , whose impossibly unique sonic abilities got her noticed and hailed by Hans Zimmer and James Newton Howard , among others .
Loire performs rhythm singing , a percussive persuasion of the human voice to create pure beats ( or to create taals ). She draws a large part of her creative inspiration from scat singing in the jazz tradition and South Indian konnakol .
