We know it ’ s tough , but can you choose your favourite track of the album ?
Tough question indeed , and the truth is , my favourite song keeps changing . It used to be ‘ Flavors ’, then it was 24 / 7 , now it ’ s ‘ Pull me Back ’, only because I love driving songs & pull me back is great to listen to when you ’ re doing a 100km / hr on an empty highway .
Why do you think people should listen to entire albums instead of just singles ?
Listening to an album is the only way you can really get to know what an artist is all about . There is a lot of thought that goes into making an album . Of course , it all takes work , but maybe the intent & motivation is different for singles versus albums . I personally think singles are a great way forward when doing multi-artists collaborations , or when you are doing a song to raise awareness about a social issues etc . But when an artist or a band wants to make a definitive musical statement about themselves , then it ’ s gotta be an album .
Your song “ Ezhunthu Va ” had a strong socio-political message ? How can music artists help change the course of society for the better ?
Artists have always been at the forefront of change , because great art has the potential to change the way people think & feel . Thats why music & film are such powerful mediums , and it ’ s a great responsibility for all of us , it ’ s not just to entertain , it ’ s beyond that . ‘ Ezhunthu Va ’ was inspired by the suppression we all felt during the lockdown . It was a call to action , something we all felt strongly about at the time , and ADK was incredible to work with , he wrote such powerful lyrics on the track !
Do you sing in the shower ? If yes , then tell us a few songs ?
I never sing in the shower ! I think it ’ s a thing that non-singers do , maybe the shower is the one place they feel safe enough to sing , or maybe I ’ m an anomaly , I have no idea ! But no , strictly no shower singing for me .
Can you imagine your life without music ? If yes , what would it be like ?
Actually , I have made it a point to spend time in silence over the past few years , be it at a nature retreat or even if I ’ m just at home . Sometimes it ’ s good to hear the silence , the silence is part of the music . But cutting music out altogether ? I don ’ t think that ’ s ever going to be an option .
Which is the favourite show that you have performed in your career and why ?
I have done a lot of great shows , with great audiences around the world . The best feeling is when the crowd knows all the lyrics and they sing it with you ! It just makes you feel such unconditional love ,
Being a part of the independent music industry , what are the few things you wish changed to make the scene better ?
I am not yet a part of the indie music scene , I ’ ve been a playback music singer for over a decade , but this album is my first real attempt at penetrating the indie English music scene in India .
What are the 3 things you do before any show ? Whats your secret sauce ?
I have a chat with my band where we discuss any last min changes to the setlist , I love to drink masala tea backstage ( because it ’ s great for the throat ) & I actually like doing my own make-up , cos that ’ s such an important part of getting into my onstage avatar .
