Indie Quickie Jessie Lyngdoh
Meghalaya-born and based singer-composer Jessie Lyngdoh moves between genres with an ease that comes from seeing music not just as something you create , but as a part of yourself . Her new release ‘ Murdah ’ is a self-assured declaration of personal power , but her other tracks are anything from sprightly , hopeful , optimistic to pensive and brooding .
Jessie stands out . She grapples with the many struggles of composing , releasing and performing as an independent musician , but remains staunchly faithful to her own sound . She is deeply conscious of the struggles of her fellow musicians , and openly experimental with the unique sounds of her birthplace .
Her music comes from her roots , and speaks to her star-seeking aspirations . She wants to be big , but on her own artistic terms . You either take Jessie with all her “ eff-the-standards ”, pathbreaking tendencies , or you just don ’ t take her . But given the popularity of ‘ Murdah ’, we ’ d say she and her music have found plenty of takers .
The Score Magazine caught up with Jessie to pick her brain , get the down-low on what makes her impossible to ignore , and why we should be paying more attention to the music of Meghalaya
