ARUSHI GARG
Symphonies are the grandest compositions that use an orchestra to perform , which becomes a confluence of different musical instruments converging to form a piece of music that transcends into a powerfully rhythm . Here is a list of symphonies which are notches above others due to their otherworldly quality and sheer brilliance .
Symphonie Fantastique – Berlioz Considered the best work of French composer Hector Berlioz , the symphony is filled with notes which are sweet and calming while simultaneously evoking a sense of grandeur . Each note tells the tale of the unrequited love for a woman whose rejection turned an artist to spiral towards opium poisoning . This is mildly true to the real-life incident of the composer himself , who is believed to have written some portion of this piece in an opium-induced hallucinated dream which paves the way to the dream-like quality of this masterpiece .
Symphony No . 6 – Tchaikovsky Known for his ballet pieces like ‘ Swan Lake ’ and ‘ The Nutcracker ’, Tchaikovsky ’ s pieces have a magical quality that takes the listener transport to the world of charms , fairies and gnomes . Known as the ‘ Pathetique Symphony ’ or ‘ Passionate Symphony ’, this work was his culminating symphony . However , this one has hints of his statement work but also emotes a solemn emotional value that has shades of darkness . This could be due to the fact that this piece came from the rampant moods of the composer , which he felt during that time .
Symphony No . 3 – Beethoven Composed by the Grandmaster of symphonies himself , Ludwig Van Beethoven ’ s Symphony No . 3 is considered to be the greatest one ever written . Commonly known as ‘ Eroica ’, which means ‘ Heroic ’, this piece saw an innovative drive which made Beethoven so revered . Touted as the first Romantic Symphony after a gradual shift from the Classic Era , which saw dramatic notes rising and collapsing to create a brilliant work . It provides vivid imagery through symphonic and harmonic movements forming an intricate story .
Symphony No . 40 – Mozart Set to the tone of G minor , making it known as the ‘ the great G minor symphony ’, this piece has a major fan following and is very recognisable worldwide . This symphony uses a flute , clarinets , bassoons , horns , strings and oboes , which gives it a very dense and mellifluous sound . The cheerfulness is coupled with a tinge of tragedy which makes it even more bespoke and adds to its unwavering quality . The timelessness of this piece is the testimony of the greatness of Mozart and his accomplishments in a very short life .
Symphony No . 4 – Brahms Heralded as the successor of Beethoven , Brahms used emotions to convey a supremely superior piece of music that made people take notice . He uses his versatility as a composer , which can be seen in his penultimate Symphony No . 4 , which does not hit hard but gradually overflows to mesmerise the listener . The symphony engulfs yet induces freedom which is a very rare phenomenon perfectly symbolised by Brahms . It can also be noted that in the last movement , symphonic passacaglia is used , which is very unique .
