MEERA C Firstly, are you guys sure you’re not sisters? You look very much so and we heard that your taste in music is also very similar. Haha maybe we were in another life.. Soul sisters! What is the story behind two beautiful ladies becoming one of the most popular DJ duos in the country? How did it all begin? We love house music and had lots of DJ friends so we just learnt for fun.. It started out a a hobby and snowballed into a carrier! You have an American tour coming up. Tell us some details about the tour. Are you nervous? We can't share details justs yet but we're very excited.. It's our first time playing in america You have played over a hundred gigs. How has the stage treated you? Yes of course! This year alone we've done around 52 gigs.. Great so far! Your remix of Maps by Maroon5 has been the talk of the town for some time now. Tell us about the process of making it and its reception. This remix is actually Adam Levine(Maroon5) mixed with Michael Calfan. His piano sounds are infact the inspiration behind this remix. We had been working on it since a long time and thankfully, getting a good response from all around. Which is the one song that gets the most requests when you play? We don't usually take requests Who are your music idols? Music idol would be Madonna...for her achievements as a female artist more than for her music. She's one of a kind What are your most favourite remixes ever? We don't have a favourite remix in particular as it is ever changing. We get bored of tracks quickly What are your favourite genres of music besides electronic? Nina - Hip Hop Malika - Deep House What would you consider to be the greatest influences for your music? For Elektrovertz.. Chicane, Eric Prydz, Daft Punk If you hadn’t become a DJ, what would you both have become? Nina - a mom lol Malika - a clothes designer On a serious note, were you ever subjected to the “pretty face stereotype”? If so, how did you overcome it? Hahaha yes of course, we still deal with it sometimes.. It's usually when the person hasn't heard us.. Everyone is a victim of judgment based on perception.. The way we over come it is by changing the judgment by skill and talent/playing a killer set! Being one of the few women on the scene, is there a bias about the music you create- both, among the audience and fellow musicians? People usually expect us to play very commercial music but are surprised when they hear our underground project 'Nina & Malika' Seeing as you’ve already broken stereotypes, do you think music should transcend beyond what it is and also be bold enough to make a social statement? Of course it should and it will just wait and watch! Where do you see Electrovertz in five years? On top of the world!! Heehee The Score Magazine www.thescoremagazine.com 25
