The Making

part of the name definitely originated from the tapioca. In several areas of China, milk tea with tapioca is called 珍珠奶茶. The “珍珠” part literally translates into “pearl” and 奶茶 into milk tea. On the other hand, the origin of “bubble” milk tea or rather it’s root version, “bubble” tea is due to its preparatory method. The tea was made in a cocktail shaker, and having lots of bubbles/foam in it led to its nickname. Honestly, I believe this theory to be more accurate but that’s just my own opinion.

Boba milk tea has 3 main ingredients within it. The milk, the tea, and the tapioca (no surprise here). The tea is usually brewed as black tea or green tea and the milk ranging from skim to actual milk. The boba all have the same origin, the cassava plant (its root to be accurate). It’s mainly made from starch, but the taste of the boba comes from the syrup it was soaked in. Boba by itself has a rather boring taste, but chewy nonetheless. They are quite high in sugar and carbohydrates. The calories of an 8-ounce serving milk tea contains about 158 calories. People usually don’t drink only 8 ounces but 16 , 24, or 32 ounces of milk tea. Overall, it doesn’t provide any benefits even if it contains tea and milk. Sweetener is usually added into the milk tea, leading it to becoming something to drink for fun rather than health. There’s over 18 grams of sugar within each serving of milk tea and it increases your daily calorie intake by more than just a handful. Even so, this wouldn’t stop most people from drinking milk tea due to how much they like drinking it, including me.
