FEDEX FLIGHT 910

A bit later after the American Airlines plane aborted takeoff in Chicago , another airplane , this time a DC-10 belonging to FedEx , suffered a left gear collapse on runway 10L at Fort Lauderdale Hollywood International Airport in Florida . The plane had skidded of the runway , scratching its left engine on the tarmac , which caused an engine fire . Minutes later , the fire in the left engine caused a huge explosion throwing big pieces of the left engine cover meters above the airplane . The airport was closed until 7pm local time and afterwards continued its operations using the second runway . Runway 10L stayed closed due to the investigation of the crash . Both pilots escaped without injuries by a rope ladder on the right side of the plane . The aircraft ( reg . N370FE ) flew from Memphis , the carrier ’ s main hub , on a scheduled cargo flight to Fort Lauderdale . The plane is more than 43 years old , nothing unusual for a freighter .
