Serving as the first project from Vic Mensa in almost 2 years, TAGO shows the different sides of Vic. This EP trades in the happy go lucky sound that Chance the Rapper and him helped build for a more mature and experimental sound. TAGO shows Vic Mensa's versatility, yet it proves that he hasn't quite determined what his own style is. While that could be a huge issue on a major label debut album, There's Alot Going On is quick and enjoyable. Save for the so-so appeal of "New Bae," the EP is an intriguing listen. The production, as varied as it may seem, does support Vic Mensa very well regardless of the scenario. The bars are immaculate on a couple of the tracks, but the album seems to be more like a personal story that an effort to show off his skills. Songs like the impressive "There's Alot Going On" exemplify that Vic's ability to paint a picture of his personal troubles is chillingly precise, regardless of whether one considers his verses full of bars. On the opposite side of the spectrum is "Shades of Blue," with a chilling lyrical rampage and a chorus that warms your soul. TAGO is an overall success, and it may be the sign of a star in the making. RJ
This mixtape was my formal introduction to a Lil Uzi project, so I approached the project with no expectations. The undisputable high point of the mixtape is the production. With contributions from Maaly Raw, Don Cannon, Metro Boomin, Wondagurl amongst others, Lil Uzi Vert Vs. The World doesn't sonically sound like anything else out right now, which strengthens the release altogether. Lil Uzi, the emcee in question, has a great voice for music, and his flows are infectious. His energy flows throughout his verses and adlibs, making his lack luster lyricism catchy and heartfelt. It took me a while to get past his repetitive nature, but now that I have I can listen to Lil Uzi Vert Vs. The World from front to back without any issue. As a package Lil Uzi Vert is an anomaly, presenting luxury rap from the perspective of a kid ready to take on the world in the most exciting way possible. His youth shines throughout the mixtape, creating an immersive world through his music. Lil Uzi Vert Vs. The World is only 9 tracks long, so I'm ecstatic to see what he can do with a full length effort. RJ
