Ludacris made a really impressive album. He delivers perhaps one of the most lyrical albums of the year. With 14 songs, there’s only 1 skippable song and 2 sub-par joints. Although the 37-year old rapper is downplayed nowadays, this is one album that shouldn’t be slept on. The first 5 tracks are a testament to Luda’s ability to write genuinely hard, thought provoking, and hilarious lyrics. That traction comes to an immediate halt with the awful record known as “Get Lit.” Why Luda? Why? After such a huge misstep, Luda finally reaches recovers on the touching “Ocean Skies,” a song about his late father. The final sequence of the album isn’t strong, and failed to establish an amazing album. The song with Usher was extremely cheap, and “Charge It To The Rap Game” is just off. In the end, Ludacris sort of tore down what he built just to try and start all over. Perhaps that was his intention all along though. Is it a metaphor to his own Hip-Hop career? He touches on the ups and downs of his career in “Grass Is Always Greener” and “This Has Been My World.” If so, Ludacris has delivered the next best concept album to Kendrick Lamar’s TPAB. If not, however, Luda has simply made a really nice record that reminds us that he is one of the best lyricists alive.
