ON SUSTAINABLE AGRICULTURE
A
kilo of Organic Soyabeans, which costs 50 pesos at the
Department of Agriculture, is good for 200 square meters of
soil. If you don’t have that much piece of land, then plan to
plant just a quarter or a half kilo of it and research about urban
gardening or planting in plant boxes.
Soyabeans can be easily grown (even along with a few weeds) as long
as the soil is fertile and not always flooded. Organic fertilizers are
always the best to use. Sow 3-4 soyabeans per hole (in the soil), with 1
meter apart each hole. You will see soya sprouts after a week. After a
month, it will produce flowers. In two months, pods are visible. But the
soya plant can only be harvested on the third month. It can yield 25
kilos or more if a kilo of it is planted on a 200 sq. m. FERTILE land.
One of the most important thing to be considered when planning to
harvest the soya plant is to know whether the third month is part of the
dry season or wet season. Harvested soya pods need to be sundried or
else moisture will enter the beans causing it to rot.
In my case, I don’t have a large piece of available land, so I just planted
some of the soyabeans I have in our little garden last Sunday, August
17. I removed some of the grasses and put organic fertilizer. After 5
days, I already saw some sprouts. What’s good about our garden is that
our water tank is just above it, and everytime it gets full, the water just
spills down to the garden. My next plan is to continue adding organic
fertilizer while they continue to grow.
