Swing into spring with home upgrades
W
hile spring naturally
means it’s time for a
refresh for many home-
owners, it doesn’t mean
you’re limited only to a cleaning party.
Take advantage of the season by
using it as an opportunity to upgrade
different areas of your home
for reasons ranging from energy
efficiency and convenience to ease of
living and safety.
ELEGANT,
FUNCTIONAL SHELVING
Open shelving can add character,
design and attractive storage to your
home. For example, ventilated shelv-
ing exhibits simple elegance and is
both an aesthetically pleasing way to
showcase your favorite things and
functional enough to keep linens fresh
in the closet or hold clutter at bay by
the front door. Made from solid wood
and epoxy-coated steel, the shelves
are easy to install, durable and can
complement nearly any room.

A FRONT DOOR FIXER UPPER
Anytime is a good time to make
sure your home is safe, particularly
at what’s often the main point of
entry – your front door. This spring is
an ideal time to keep out unwanted
guests with a door that’s sturdy and
draft-resistant while also providing
an aesthetic touch for enhanced curb
appeal. When choosing a door that’s
right for your home, focus on options
that include a strong deadbolt and
thick frame for peace of mind.
SMART HOME SAFETY
With safety typically representing
a top priority for most homeowners,
taking advantage of smart technol-
ogy can be one way to improve your
feelings of safety and comfort in your
home. A solution like a smart lock
on the main entryway to your house
can add security while also ensuring
you’re never locked out of your own
home. With options that can pair with
apps on your smartphone or feature
keyless entry via unique numerical
passwords, you can marry conve-
nience with safety.

Window Walls: Pair with a beautiful view
CONTINUED FROM PAGE 1H
seasons. Glass walls in more temper-
ate climates work year-round. In
this part of the country, there is a
seasonal consideration. In the spring
and summer, when the trees and
bushes are in full bloom, nature
provides a natural screen. But once
the trees are bare, you’ll need to
consider what happens to views
both inside and outdoors. If you are
not facing a ‘nice view’ you can use
landscape design to create one. There
are many companies offering ‘nature
walls’ for both covered and outside
applications.”
Sherman also said, “It depends on
what you want to achieve, and how
you’ll go about it. Recalling a project
she designed for client in Florida,
she explains, “The entire back of the
house overlooked the Intracoastal
Waterway. During the day, it was a
beautiful view, but tour boats cruis-
ing the neighborhood posed a privacy
issue. So screening [with landscaping]
around the bathrooms was used to
protect the users’ privacy while still
allowing a glass wall to look into their
courtyard.”
LOCATION, LOCATION
Gathering spaces, such as kitchens
and living areas are natural loca-
tions for window walls. However, you
can locate them anywhere, even in
bathrooms, as Sherman’s client did.
The right window treatments, typi-
cally hard-wired or battery-operated,
motorized shades or blinds, can be
programmed to open or close at any
time of day or night. Most come with
a remote control, and some systems
are wireless. They’ll take care of any
privacy issues and do a good job of
controlling sunlight when it’s too hot,
or simply too early!
Also, to make sure you’ll be
framing the art that is nature, not
the backyard shed or your neigh-
bor’s recycling containers, walk the
site, in the case of new construction.
Otherwise take a long stroll around
your property. What do you want
to see; don’t want to see? Suburbia
in these parts doesn’t usually offer
much in the way of majestic mountain
views or shoreline vistas, but a beauti-
ful landscape, even a venerable
old tree can be inspiring throughout
the changing seasons.
While you’re at it, check the direc-
tion of the sun at different times of
the day (morning, midday, and after-
noon) when contemplating where
you’ll site the window wall. Keep in
mind, northern light can be gray and
cold in the winter; southern light blaz-
es warm even hot in summer, all day
long; an eastern exposure receives
most of its light in the morning sun,
and a west-facing window will admit
strong sunlight in the afternoon.
GENERAL CONSIDERATIONS
If you’re renovating, remember
most homes have standard size
window openings, said Fennessy.
“Creating a new or custom-size open-
ing requires a certified professional.”
She also says to hire a specialized
window installation company versus a
general contractor. “They are familiar
with the common issues that arise,
and can more easily address them.”
Finally, she offers this advice: “Make
sure your budget is flexible for any
type of custom work.”
