THE SCIENCE OF STRESS Ac c o r d i n g to the American Institute of Stress– stress is the number one killer disease in the world. Stress is brought upon by various life changing events that disturb a persons normal day-to-day life, these events could include loosing a job or having a demanding position, university exams, loosing someone you love, trouble with friends, change in personal finances and parents divorcing. When a person is stressed, stress hormones target blood vessels which eventually leads to increased blood pressure. If stress is not managed, it gives rise to other opportunistic diseases such as sugar diabetes, hypertension, heart disease and ageing due to the increased blood pressure. These opportunistic diseases make the immune system weak, and when the immune system is weak you will become sick easily The 21st century has seen the rise in technology users; social media sites such as FACEBOOK, INSTAGRAM and PINTREST allow us to easily keep in touch with our friends, family and individuals that we have not seen in a long time. The availability and access of information adds to the mental stress as we are constantly processing information without giving our minds a break.
