students shine at

academic Awards

On Wednesday April 29, families of juniors and seniors gathered into the Union Catholic auditorium to celebrate the academic achievements of their students. For the first time, juniors and seniors shared the night instead of it being solely dedicated to seniors. Seniors Kate Carolan and Richard Ryngel lead the attendants in prayer before Lauren Guerra ’17 beautifully sang the national anthem. Sister Percylee Hart, RSM gave her Principle’s Remarks and the presentation of awards began.

Master of Ceremony Edward Sagendorf explained the receiving of certificates. A Certificate of Honor was presented to every student who maintained Honor Roll status for the first three marking periods of the year. A Certificate of Award was presented to all students who maintained an A average in any subject for the entire school year. Students picked up their certificates after the ceremony in the cafeteria, where they were also treated to ice cream and toppings. Winners were also announced for the subject Olympiad exams. Each subject honored the top ten students and gave a medal to the top place winner.

Medallions were presented to all students who maintained a 7.0 grade point average for the current school year. As names were called, brilliantly dressed students paraded across the stage and shook Sister Percylee’s hand. Special awards and scholarships were given out next. These included the Rensselaer Award & Scholarship for math and science, granted to Nicole Walker ’16, the American Association of Teachers of French Outstanding Senior in French Award to Bridget McAllister ’15, the Bausch and Lomb Honorary Science Award to Jessica Florendo ’16, the Dorothy Grankowski Endowed Scholarship to Grace Gelcius ’15, and many more.

The night was an overall success, and all the students enjoyed a nice of classy outfits, academic success, and celebration of UC students. The event was also broadcasted to family and friends that could not attend the event. “I was very happy that the event was livestreamed on the UC website,” beamed Emily Garno ’16. “My family and I could watch in from home since we couldn’t attend.”

For all those who could go, the night was spectacular. When freshmen and sophomore celebrate their academic achievements later this year with their own awards night, it is sure to be just as big of a hit. Congratulations to all students!
