Our Land
"The Furthest of the Forest"
"The Furthest of the Forest" is located along the east
boundry of the Pomfret campus. It is not visited by many
humans besides some horseback riders. A large manmade path, known as the The Yankee Gas Pipeline runs through part of our land. This pipeline starts in Texas and goes all the way to Maine. Remains of Stone Walls run through our land. These are what is left of the
sheep pastures and farm lands that covered New England in the 1800s. Swamp land covers the western section of our plot. The marshy land is mostly covered by dried fragmites and grass. Many birds and other small forest animal inhabit this area. Our forest also provides shelter for larger mammals, like the white-tailed deer and the eastern coyote. The dense underbrush in some parts of the land allow deer to hide during the day while they digest thier food. Sadly our forest is also infested by invasisve species. The two primary ones bieng the Bittersweet, a vine, and the Japanese Barberry, a thorn bush. A small vernal pool, located in the southern section, is a niche for frogs when they are breeding in the early spring.
