CLUBS & ACTIVITIES
ECO COMMITTEE
It has been an exciting year for the Eco Committee , coming back together to work on the school campus .
This year , we began our weekly Eco Club , which has been a great success – giving students the time and space to make progress on new initiatives . This spring , we have researched bee and butterfly-friendly plants , then grew our own from seed , ready to be planted out around the campus .
There has been regular litter picking around school and actively encouraging others to use the recycle bins . We have also been exploring sites to encourage habitats for insects , hedgehogs and birds around school grounds .
This year , saw the new Eco Committee noticeboard going up in the main corridor of the school , updating the wider school with ongoing projects and creative work . This has been a great way to encourage more students to join and get involved , and it will give us a place to raise current issues within school .
Encouraged by COP26 in October last year , pupils began to look at ways we can reduce emissions in school . We are still working on a campaign to reduce idling in the car parks and at drop off / pick up points – to be continued this year !
The Second Year students worked on a successful cross-curricular eco project , with geography , art and IT , focusing on creating a digital magazine which explores sustainability , designing and building a model of an eco-home , and in the art department , the students created a multimedia collage to highlight ecological issues such as global warming , deforestation , animal species decline , and pollution .
We were also delighted to be included in the Christmas Tree Festival held at Pocklington ’ s All Saints Church – adorning one of the trees with entirely handmade , recycled decorations , and gift-wrapping ideas . A lovely festive way to end the Christmas Term ! See page 15 for the article and photographs .
BARBEL CLUB
It has been wonderful to see some of our Senior pupils ( many of whom started as beginners !) get into the gym to learn more about Olympic lift techniques , including ‘ Snatch ’ and ‘ Clean and Jerk ’.
In addition , we have worked on improving mobility and building strength through front and back squats and the overhead press .
Well done to everyone for giving their all and making great progress !
