England Player
Pathway
Nineteen Hockey players have been
selected as having the talent and
potential to play at elite level as
part of the England Hockey Player
Pathway programme.
The girls were identified while playing
against other regional teams at a
selection day in Hull in November and
have been invited to train at a Junior
Academy Centre (JAC) in Driffield.
JACs offer high quality training and
competition to help develop players’
skills and realise their potential.
Lucy Hornby, teacher i/c of Girls’
Hockey, said: “It’s a huge achievement
for the girls as it’s the first step for the girls
to progress through the England Hockey
U15A XI
P8 / W4 / D0 / L4
The girls arrived for their first training
session back in September, excited and
ready for the season ahead. Our first
job was to discuss our mutual goal for
the season, something that would drive
us all forward to be the best that we
could be in our performance on the
pitch. Our philosophy was quite simply
‘commitment’; we wanted to commit
to training, commit to our team mates,
commit to our availability for matches
and most importantly, commit to all
working together to achieve a successful
and memorable season.
Our first match of the season and the
4-0 loss to RGS was actually a blessing
in disguise; our girls weren’t quote
expecting the whirlwind of the fit and
skilful RGS team and this set the tone
for the season. On the back of reflecting
on that match, the intensity and level of
commitment at training the following
was at a whole new level and the U15
girls were training like they had a point
to prove. A newly determined U15 A
squad took on Ashville and played them
off the field, with skilful and composed
attacking as well as confident defending,
Elite programme; they will have the
opportunity to train with and play against
girls of similar high standards which in
turn will be great for their own personal
development as hockey players.”
She added: “We took two hockey squads
to the selection day and all the Pock girls
played with grit and determination and
came away with some great team results.”
The girls selected were:
U13: Louisa Chacksfield, Bella Foley,
Orla Jamieson, Evie Rennison, Scarlett
Robinson, Izzy Rowley, Belle Yeomans
U14: Phoebe Anderson, Lucy Grewer,
Daisy Luckett, Isabelle Newall-
Watson, Honey Roe, Rosie Snelling
U15: Carmen Brooks, Daisy Hudson,
Lily-Rose Levine (GK), Evie Parkinson,
Maddie Parkinson, Elizabeth Wake
the girls came away with an 8-0 win,
which was thoroughly deserved. The
team continued with this momentum
and had fought hard for wins against
Barnard Castle and Giggleswick, losing
only to a well drilled Worksop side.
The real highlight of the season however,
was the match against Hymers; a local
derby is always an exciting fixture and
this one was certainly to be no different.
The Pocklington ladies took a while
to find their feet in the first half of the
game, making silly mistakes in attack
and midfield, and ultimately put the
defence under pressure. Half time came
around and we found ourselves 2-1
down; a gritty team talk in which we
reminded ourselves of our philosophy
of ‘commitment’, as well as some
incredible mental strength from the girls
saw a newly focussed and determined
team walk onto the pitch for the second
half. Amy Jordan and Ellie Broadbent
worked tirelessly in sending attacking
balls down to Lucy Hatfield and Georgia
Byass for them to keep stretching the
Hymers team in their defensive 23;
Emma Rumgay, Charlie Groombridge
and Emma Mackay continued to hassle
the Hymers defence in the D to create
vast opportunities at goal. Over the 25
minutes of the second half, we scored
4 goals and allowing Hymers none.
Hannah Hornshaw was phenomenal in
goal, and Lani Frost, Izzy Scanlon and
Ruby Remblance played with class and
composure when under pressure at the
back. The final score was 5-2 to Pock;
what a memorable day that was!
The U15 girls have gone from strength to
strength this season; they have benefitted
from some incredibly inspiring team
talks from Mr Ronan and have all
worked hard to achieve the same goal.
Special thanks must go to Lucy Hatfield
who served as a superb and motivating
Captain, assisted very ably by both
Ellie Broadbent and Amy Jordan as
Vice Captains- their Leadership of the
squad has been invaluable. The energy
and sense of fun of the U15 squad has
been a pleasure for Miss Rees and I to
be around and, with the future of the
Senior Hockey squad in their hands as
of next season, it looks like the future of
Pocklington School Hockey is going to
be a bright one.
