SCHOOL NEWS// STAFF LEAVERS RICHARD WAREHAM So whilst this is my leaving statement, just like Jaws isn’t a movie about a Shark, this shouldn’t be about me, but, about the school. Even though I have only been here for two years I like to think I have made a difference, of which some has been for the better. I believe BTEC is growing slowly, but is still the best way for students to go beyond their A level capability and add value to their UCAS predictions and points. BTEC is not A level in any way; teaching, marking or managed, but does has equal value to A level in UCAS points and credibility among Universities. Boarding goes from strength to strength and is a great way to prepare and develop pupils to having a working relationship, preparing their own development plans, time management, resilience, perseverance and self organisation with staff or if you see the bigger picture and glimpse into their future working world they become line managers. Thank you to everyone in FSH for allowing me to be part of that process. I want to thank all of the friendly and hard working staff at school for so many things; such as laughing politely at my jokes, reading and correcting my reports, book requests, applying filters to conversations, listening to podcasts and then talking about the ideas after. Ultimately though, I have to thank the PE and Games department especially. You are amazing, kind and supportive team. Reasons being: 1) You have reaffirmed, that if ever someone is in trouble people will be there to help out. 2) If a compliment is given, you take it or reinforce it to the pupil: it is meant and sincere. 3) We include all the pupils in the department. No longer is teaching about “us and them”, and giving information to “them” but it is about “our” journey together in learning and doing better next time, taking the learning opportunity in everything we do. 10 THE POCKLINGTONIAN Lastly, I would like to thank Grugg 5A. Without doubt, the finest form I have ever worked with. It has been amazing to see you grow, almost daily, into mature (on the whole), self organising and self aware young adults. We had a great form trip to South Africa, you took on all the challenges I gave to you, to become better people and students. I look forward to finding out about your success and learning opportunities both in the 6th form and post Pocklington. I would like to say thank you to everyone for all their love and support. I have learnt a lot and I hope you have all continue to learn lessons in and out of the class room. with the game. The creation of Fortnite rugby has secured his legendary status among the year 6 boys and his continual patience and praise has only fuelled their desire to play and improve. Richard Wareham His influence on the culture and philosophy of the rugby programme is one that will continue long after he has gone. A constant advocate of striving to be a better person as well as a better player, Richard’s legacy will be clear in the actions of his players in years to come as they live these values on and off the pitch. Richard joined Pocklington in 2017 and has thrown himself into all aspects since then. Alongside his duties at Head of Rugby he has: • Become a resident tutor in Fenwick Smith • Been a source of relentless support as a day tutor • Helped lead a successful tour of South Africa • Lead Tennis for lower school boys in the summer term Under Richard’s leadership as Head of Rugby we have seen: a record number of players progress through the ranks of the ERDPP and county program; a record number of our school coaches involved in the ERDPP; the u15s have achieved national success reaching the last 16 in the schools cup and the 1st team beating Milfield in senior 7’s during a hugely successful sevens season. The school has also played an important role in independent research projects at both Leeds Beckett and Bath Universities. This has been a successful and important developmental era for Pocklington’s rugby. Richard has also inspired a generation of prep school children to fall in love Richard is an extremely caring individual who gives so much time to students around school, helping, cajoling and guiding young minds on a daily basis. He has been an exceptional Middle School Gruggen tutor, building a strong ethos built around resilience and character. His eclectic assemblies will certainly be missed!! In his two years at Pock, Richard has been a wonderful colleague but an even better friend and this will be sorely missed. His kindness and willingness to help, combined with his continual Star Wars references, will be a major loss to the games department. However, through his eternal optimism, I am sure Richard will be a success in his future endeavours and we all wish him the best for the future. May the force be with you! JMW and GJH
