Feast on Fiber

DR. VERONIQUE DESAULNIERS

to Prevent Breast Cancer

We have all heard the commercials about the benefits of fiber for the colon, but have you ever thought about how fiber can help prevent and heal Breast Cancer? Fiber actually has many medicinal qualities that can help circumvent a number of cancers.

There are 2 types of fiber: soluble and insoluble. Soluble fiber, meaning it is easily“ dissolved”, is found in vegetables and fruits, and some particular grains, like oats. Insoluble fiber is more of the roughage that we think of when it comes to fiber. The insoluble fiber adds bulk to your stool, brushes the inside of the colon and carries out the toxins.
Soluble fiber has a more profound effect.

High dietary fiber has been shown to decrease blood estrogen levels and decrease breast cancer risk.
Dietary fiber does play a role in preventing breast cancer among post-menopausal women.
Vegetables, fruits and raw nuts, which are high in soluble fiber, decreases premenopausal risk for breast cancer.
Lignans, which are found in high fiber foods such as flax and the cruciferous vegetables( broccoli and cabbage) decrease breast cancer risk by having a positive effect on estrogen signaling. In other words, these lignans are also classified as“ phyto-estrogens” and have a very protective effect on the aggressive, proliferative estrogens. They do this by blocking the hormone receptor site by 1000:1.

In 2005, the journal, Clinical Cancer Research published a placebo-controlled study involving patients who received a 25 gram flaxseed-containing muffin( 5 tablespoons) over the course of 32 days. Analysis of the cancerous tissue after surgery revealed that markers of tumor growth were reduced by 30 %-71 % in the flaxseed group, while the control group did not experience any reduction in markers of tumor growth. The scientists concluded that“ dietary flaxseed has the potential to reduce tumor growth in patients with breast cancer.” Basically the mechanism is simple. Estrogen is broken down by the liver and sent to the colon to be eliminated. If there is poor elimination and very little fiber, the estrogen can sit in the gut and recirculate. If there is plenty of insoluble fiber in the gut, the estrogen is properly excreted.
Insoluble fiber also helps to lower your breast cancer risk by regulating insulin and glucose metabolism. High blood sugar and insulin resistance increase breast cancer risk by 283 %! The higher your insulin levels, the more they attach to the breast cells and increase cell division and replication. Cancer cells have 17 times more insulin receptor sites and love to suck up the sugar.
Essential # 1 for Healing and Preventing Breast Cancer is“ Let Food Be Your Medicine.” Feasting on fiber is simply one step in being proactive with prevention.
