DANGEROUS WOMEN is a collec on of short
stories edited by George R. R. Mar n and Gardner
Dozois. While I’m not sure that each and every
women in these stories would necessarily be consid‐
ered “dangerous”, A central, if not THE central char‐
acter is a woman. And just because they may be
dangerous, they might not be the villain of the
piece.
For instance, a story by S. M. S rling has Juni‐
per Mackenzie, a major character in both The Sun‐
rise and Change series, presiding over High Jus ce in
a new world, a world where there’s literally no me
for long court proceedings. The crime of rape has
occurred, everyone in the village knows who the
perpetrator is, and there is no doubt. But now Juniper, as the Leader of Clan Mackenzie must
decide what punishment fits the crime.
Then there’s one by one of my favorite author, Jim Butcher, creator of the Dresden Files.
Harry Dresden is dead and his appren ce, Molly, finds herself the sole defense against the
Dark Forces in Chicago. And just to add to her burden, Harry’s brother Thomas as gone miss‐
ing and Molly has to find him before (of course) midnight.
And let’s not forget our author, George R. R. Mar n. The last story is a brand new novel‐
la, sort of a prequel, to Mar n’s Game of Thrones/Song of Fire and Ice saga. Here we are intro‐
duced to some of the families that become major players in the saga. However, I have to ad‐
mit, I had some trouble keeping the names straight but when there are swords and dragons,
who cares!
While I have only covered three stories, the hardcover edi on contains twenty‐one that
range from crime and mystery, urban fantasy, science fic on and fantasy to just plain weird.
Definitely a good book to curl up with on these cold winter nights.
