make merry at oad to fame
When the results were finally announced, debate was already ensuing among fans as to who had scooped the coveted prize. After all was said and done, Midlands representatives, Terry and The Bliss walked away with the first prize followed by Guruve Marimba Ensemble who were awarded US$4 000 for their effort. The third prize went to Attacking Super Sound who got US$3 000. More partying followed with an all-star line-up keeping the patrons on their feet as Chibuku celebrated their 50 years of existence in grand style. First to come on stage was rising sungura musician Romeo Gasa, who rose to stardom after winning the same competition a few years back. Young Igwe, Peter Moyo also took Dhewa fans down memory lane with his father’s timeless classics proving popular. Fans could be heard shouting “Sisi Toita basa!” Dhewa’s catch phrase. Tryson Chimbetu or Dr Nero as his fans have christened him after his late father Naison also electrified fans with his inimitable stage presence. After finishing his set, it was show time from the legendary musician Oliver Mtukudzi, one of the patrons of the competition and as usual, he delivered a near flawless act. Towards the end of his performance, fans were treated to an array of fireworks displays. It was non-stop partying as Alick Macheso took to the stage to woo thousands that had thronged the Glamis Arena .As usual, he skilfully played his guitar to the applause of the audience. Dancehall chanter Winky D was given the opportunity to sign off in style and he did exactly that. His high octane performance, theatrics and hard core lyrics sent the people that were still in the Arena into delirium. In the end, the top notch performances once again proved that Chibuku Road to Fame remains Zimbabwe’s biggest and most successful talent identification platform. A collaborative effort between Delta Beverages and the National Arts Council of Zimbabwe, Chibuku Road to Fame has over the years created an array of musicians who have gone on to become stars in their own rights and they include the Munandi express led by John Pfumojena, Club Shanga and the Romeo Gasa-led Extra Valembe.
