Youth Leaders handle our difficult questions
Martha Santamas takes on this question.
Question: Does God have a sense of humor?
Answer: The short answer to this question is yes.
A slightly longer answer is this:
In Genesis 1:27 we’ re told,“ So God created mankind in his own image, in the image of God he created them; male and female he created them.”
The mere fact that humor exists is a testimony to God’ s sense of humor. Laughing and joking were created by God and can be used to honor Him and to encourage one another. Laughing also releases endorphins, which can act as mild pain relief and give you a feeling of well-being, just like exercise.
Some of the stories in the Bible also testify to God’ s sense of humor. God promised Abraham and Sarah a child in their old age and when He fulfilled this promise we read in Genesis 21:5-7:“ Abraham was a hundred years old when his son Isaac was born to him. Sarah said,‘ God has brought me laughter, and everyone who hears about this will laugh with me.’ And she added,‘ Who would have said to Abraham that Sarah would nurse children? Yet I have borne him a son in his old age.’”
Right here, we’ re told quite straightforwardly that God brings us laughter and so must therefore have a sense of humor!
Marine biologists will also probably give you the same kind of answer, but with the reason being that God created sea horses in whose case the males get pregnant. Also, some might say that giraffes in their own right are a testimony to God’ s sense of humor.:-)
