Firstly, depending on whether the decision to divorce is yours or your partner’s, it is advisable to be the one to tell your partner that you intend to divorce as hearing it from family, friend or relatives or any other third party is not going to help the process get off to a smooth start and can cause further hurt and resentment. · Get organised: If and once the decision has been made that divorce is the way forward, it’s essential to get yourself organised. Putting a plan in place for dealing with the legal issues such as choosing a lawyer and any other important issues that might impact your situation is vitally important. · Seek legal advice: Choosing the right lawyer to represent you through this process is vital. It’s strongly advisable to choose a specialist family law firm as family law differs greatly from other litigation. · Preparing yourself for court: For many of us the thought of mediation or going to court can be a daunting one and so it’s vitally important that you get a clear understanding from your lawyer as to the likely procedures and your part in them.
