OP TENNIS
Pocklington School, Sunday 3 July 2016 2.00pm
In the afternoon of the OP Summer Reunion, two tennis events took place on the school astros. In the traditional match against the 1st VI boys team, the availability of only 5 male OPs meant that former girls captain Frankie Marsh( 06-13) stepped in to partner Trevor Loten( 70-80) at third pair, with the first and second pairs being Max( 98-09) and Louis Los( 99-10) and Zak Los( 02-13) and George Hobson( 03-14) – a pretty formidable outfit! Despite some close sets, the experience of the OP team in the windy conditions led to a comprehensive 9-0 victory; it was a shame that two of the school’ s top four tennis players were playing cricket for the 1stXI!
Eight pairs played in the mixed doubles competition, which is an opportunity for OPs, parents and pupils to play in a“ fun” tournament. However, there is now a trophy to be won! Having battled through their groups and the semi-finals, OPs Liz Bramley( 88- 97) and Georgina Booth( née Chapman, 96-06) narrowly lost out to the father / daughter pairing of Stuart and Olivia Turner( 06-13) in the final; Stuart and Olivia are the inaugural winners of The Edmund / Loten Inspire Trophy. The trophy has been initiated in recognition of two OPs: current rising star Kyle Edmund( 02-06), member of Great Britain’ s victorious Davis Cup team in 2015, and Trevor Loten, who has now been i / c boys’ tennis for 24 years.
Thank you to Patrick Dare for the smooth running of the competition and here’ s to next year’ s OP tennis event!
FIFTH ANNUAL POCKLINGTONIAN GOLF DAY
Former parent, Jim Bloom, led Warrendale Farms to victory on the team’ s debut at the annual Pocklingtonian Golf Day on Friday 6 May 2016 at The Oaks Golf Club.
There was a good mix of OPs, current and former parents, staff, friends and colleagues taking part in this year’ s event which was kindly sponsored by the family-run car dealership SG Petch.
Their hole-in-one competition with a main prize of a Fiat 500 was hotly contested with Jerry Petch himself coming very close to winning his own car when the ball hit the pin … before rolling away on to the green!
With the hole-in-one main prize unclaimed for another year, there were plenty of other prizes on offer including the coveted President’ s Cup.
Here are the results of the main competition: 1st Prize and The Tom Nash President’ s Cup Winners 2016: Warrendale Farms – Jim Bloom, James Thornton, Richard Bloom, Ali Johnson
2nd Prize: A Bag O’ Peas – Henry Laverack( 03- 10), Isaac Green( 09-11), James Bisson( 04-12), Louis Smith( 99-10)
3rd Prize: The Whifflers – Fraser Davis( 09-14), Paul Davis, Tony Risso-Gill, Charles Hodgeson
There were also prizes for nearest the pin, nearest the pin in two and the longest drive. The winners were as follows:
Nearest the pin: Trevor Loten( 70-80) of Pocklington Staff
Nearest the pin in two: Adam Verney( 85-92) of RMS Group Holdings
Longest drive: Isaac Green( 09-11) of A Bag O’ Peas
Everyone said how much they enjoyed the event and what excellent condition the course at The Oaks was in, despite the recent wet weather. Headmaster, Mark Ronan, greeted guests in the club house as they came in from their rounds. After supper, OP President Andrew Wilson( 89-99) presented the prizes and announced Warrendale Farms as the 2016 winners of the President’ s Cup.
Thanks go to the Nutt family for their hospitality at The Oaks Golf Club, to SG Petch for sponsoring the hole-in-one competition, to Leanne Maycock for running the half-way house and for her help on the day, and to all the teams for taking part and making it such an enjoyable day.
OP GOLF SOCIETY: BIRKDALE BUCKET 2016
This year’ s Birkdale Bucket took place 18-20 March 2016 at the world famous Woodhall Spa Golf Course in Lincolnshire, and followed the same time-honoured itinerary: informal golf on Friday afternoon, the 18 Hole Stableford on Saturday morning for the Birkdale Bucket and the Sunday morning foursomes for the Hinchcliffe Tankards, all played on the fabulous Hotchkin course.
The OP Golf Society fielded a team and thanks Richard( 73-78) and Edward Wenninger( 76- 81) for their late participation. The team’ s four best scores of 113 needed an excellent score from Mark Addison to save any wooden spoon embarrassment: Tim Russell( 68-78) 29, Larry Lawson( 70-77) 25, Mike Strong( 66-76) 24 and Mark Addison( 69-76) 35.
Despite a poor outward nine, Mark managed to come home in level par to rescue the team score and also win the individual event for the coveted Hinchcliffe Spade, on a better back nine. Sadly, the weekend success finished there with no-one in the money from the Sunday foursomes.
Looking forward, the 2017 dates are 17-19 March again at Woodhall Spa, one of the World’ s top 100 golf courses. We urgently need some new players and the event suits anyone up to 24 handicap, who would like to play. There is an optional practice round on the Friday, then golf on both Saturday and Sunday morning. We play against ten other schools in a friendly but competitive environment.
Please get in touch with Rachel at the OP office or Mike Strong if you would like to play or want more details. The weekend may be subsidised for younger OPs or those not in full-time employment.
