With the wedge pounded into the saw
kerf, be sure to look down your felling
line to make sure you’re clear. Once you’ve
confirmed that things are clear, cut just
below the back-cut which will allow for a
controlled descent. If the tree does not fall,
continue pounding the wedge from the side
of the tree.
10
As the tree begins to fall, yell “TIMBER!” and walk (don’t run)
down your escape route. Be sure that your chain brake is set
for safety.
11
As you
watch
the tree fall
from the safety
of your escape
route, watch for
“widow-makers”
and branches
that can fall from
surrounding
trees. Do not
approach the tree
until the crowns
of neighboring
trees have
stopped moving.
12
After the tree is safely on the ground,
assess your tree placement and notch
for accuracy. Doing this will reinforce the
development of your felling technique.
