With the notch complete, move to the
uphill side (or opposite the direction of
side lean) to begin the plunge or bore cut.

The bore cut is made by inserting the “attack” corner
of the bar just behind the hinge, establishing a hinge
thickness equal to 10% of the tree’s diameter and cutting
toward the back of the tree until only a thin strip remains.

bore cut
complete,
insert a plastic
wedge parallel
to the hinge.
