Will we see Golden Boy and Top Rank ending their cold war sometime in the next twelve months?
Matty: I doubt it. I think we might see a few purse bids forcing GBP fighters to take on Top Rank fighters, but after all of these years of extreme disdain for one another, I just cannot see these two promotional outfits forging a bond.
Ben: Sadly, no. The obvious match that I've already mentioned a couple times above is Donaire/Mares. If I was a betting man I would say that this fight won't come off in 2013. Neither guy seems to have any interest in co-promoting a fight with the other? Sad really.
Tommy: There's growing pressure for them to make the fights. Every time you see Oscar, Arum or Schaefer interviewed, the question comes up. Someone is going to have to be the bigger man but I really do believe Arum would make Donaire-Mares in a heartbeat. He knows he has the better fighter. It was kinda BS the way Golden Boy came out and demanded Top Rank give them Rios for one of their cards just to do business with Donaire.
Kurt: No chance. As long as they are making money while being able to cut the other one out they will continue doing what they're doing. It needs to stop. The fans deserve better.
Eddie: I really don't think so. It saddens me to say this but I really believe the only way we will see an end to this is when Bob Arum passes on and Todd Dubeof takes over the day to day actions/dealings of the entire company.
2012 was a pretty good year for boxing fans. Do you think 2013 can be better?
Matty: Easily. A lot of divisions are starting to really heat up, and if some key match-ups happen to come
about, there will be plenty to talk about in 2013.
Ben: Definitely. A couple major potential storylines:
The emergence of Nonito Donaire as a superstar.
National TV has started showing boxing.
Showtime continues to improve the fights it carries.
Floyd vs. Canelo?
Manny/Marquez V?
More Brandon Rios fights!
Tommy: 2013 can be a better year but as we've been discussing, it depends on the promoters. Top Rank and Golden Boy are running out of in-house fighters they can match together so they really need to do business. I really hope we can see Mayweather against Canelo or Matrtinez, Broner-Burns and Donaire-Rigondeaux. If these fights get made, I'll be happy.
Kurt: I really hope so. Let's just hope that some fights we want to see are made. More competitive, 50/50 type match-ups are a must.
Eddie: Of course, if we get the fights the fans want to see in 2013.
Can anybody challenge the Klitschko dominance in 2013?
Matty: By the end of the year, Price, Fury, or Pulev will have fought Wlad. I see them as the only legitimate opponents at this time, so it will all depend on what these three are actually made of and how they handle the pressures of fighting the most dominant heavyweight since Lennox Lewis.
Ben: No. Not much else I can really say on this one.
Tommy: I've never believed the Klitschko's are unbeatable but it depends on how bad their opponents want to win. Too often we've seen fighters go in out of shape and just looking to pick up a pay cheque. I dont think Alexander Povetkin will be the one, but I'm really intrigued to see them face big guys who can box and punch like Tyson Fury and David Price. David Haye is still around, too. Maybe he can do better against Vitali than he did with Wladimir.
