Thanks to his straightforward and direct approach, James K. Polk won the election by quite a large margin. With his clear and distinct plan to annex Texas, many feel that he is the kind of person who will always try their best to follow through. And with his ambition and strive, he just might be able to do exactly that. He was able to gain an even amount of both Northern as well as Southern states, too. Though he was not able to gain his home(Tennessee) or his birth (North Carolina) state, he was still able to pull through. His biggest competitor, Henry Clay came a relatively good distance behind Mr. Polk while the third largest competitor, James G. Birney, didn't make it past the popular vote into the electoral votes.
