James K. Polk Wins 1844 Election

4

After much anticipation, the winner of the 1844 presidential election has revealed that Mr. James K. Polk is our nation’s new president. After presenting some very interesting ideas concerning our quickly expanding nation, Mr. Polk was able to seize victory with a lead of 65 electoral votes over his competitor, Mr. Henry Clay.

Mr. Polk was able to garner the support of both the Northern and Southern regions of the nation through their shared appreciation of expanding our countries territory. Though there were some questionable ideals brought to light, Mr. Polk’s success was eventually ensured.

Such controversies would include Polk’s apparent support of slavery. Despite the president’s many redeeming qualities, his disregard for the immediate need for emancipation hangs like a black cloud over him. He even argues to extend the Missouri Compromise line throughout the country up to the Pacific Ocean as well as refusing to support the Wilmot Proviso.

But one must not only look at the disheartening aspects of our new leader; we must focus on the possible good that he can accomplish as well. Such accomplishments can be accountable to Mr. Polk’s respectable enthusiasm in expanding through the sprawling western half of the continent. This can especially be seen in his plans to claim land from Mexico as well as the Oregon country.

The result of his plans in annexing the Texas Republic might have some unwanted consequences, though. Due to extreme tension between the United States and the newly independent Mexico, some fear that claiming Texas might spark a feud between us and them. Such consequences might be reinforced by Mexico’s disdain for the American response to the opening up of their land between us.

Should a battle erupt between the United States and Mexico, it can be said with confidence that Mr. Polk will most certainly lead us to victory. Through past experience in the military, as well as his own cunning and intelligence, the U.S. is in safe hands with Mr. Polk.

Despite his unfortunate support of slavery, it can be said that Mr. Polk will be a most satisfactory leader of our country. Through his confidence and determination, many trust that he will be able to accomplish most of what he plans, and many look forward to the future of the country brought upon us through Mr. Polk’s capable leadership.
