FROM THE DESK OF THE PRESIDENT

CHIEF LOUIS BORDI VOORHEES PD
The New Jersey Police Chief Magazine | June 2021
This , being my final article from the President ’ s Desk during my term as our association ’ s President , is bittersweet . As I reflect on the last year , I am grateful I was able to represent our association during one of , if not the most difficult 12 months in our state ’ s and nation ’ s history as it relates to our profession . Without unearthing it all , we persevered through significant changes in our laws , changes in our policies from the Attorney General , public perspective concerning policing ; the list goes on and on . I am glad to say we continue to adjust and be the leaders for policing in our country , but we all know the job of getting the pendulum to swing back in our favor is not done .
We remain active with navigating the legislative landscape , increase and improve our public relations footprint , provide top-notch police entry and promotional testing ; we lead the way with accreditation ; and we provide the very best professional development and education available anywhere . We continue to place a high value on cultivating new relationships with important partners , while remaining loyal to our old friends . We cannot forget our tireless pursuit to protect the rights of the office of Police Chief and advocate to maintain these important positions around our state , with our own expert , Chief Ray Hayducka , leading the way for us .
I have often said that there is no place for what is generally referred to as “ Police Reform ” here in New Jersey . Instead , the only phrase that should be associated with policing in our state is “ Continued Improvement ,” which reflects the reality that of course policing in New Jersey – like every profession anywhere – can be approved , while also recognizing the best-in-the-nation police officers , agencies , and practices that we have in our state .
With that , you should remain confident that our association remains fortified with Mitch and the accompanying staff making our association great : Bill Nally , Harry Delgado , Chris Wagner , Paul Sorrentino , Melissa Gaines , Jennifer Conover , Ray Davis , Mike Morris , Vito Gagliardi , and Lew Schlosser . I cannot leave out all the work being done by our current Board of Officers , Sergeants at Arms , our Committee Chairs , and every one of our County associations . More importantly , our association does not thrive without YOU , the members , and your active participation in all our programs and our yearly conference .
I look forward to serving as the Immediate Past President for our incoming President , Chief John Zebrowski , who undoubtedly will represent us with distinction . I will conclude with this : please continue to set the bar high , get involved , and mentor the officers behind you .
