The Israeli Perspective - Justice Dalia Dorner

By: Ido Dagan

Dalia Dorner was born in Istanbul, Turkey on 3rd March 1934 and in 1944 her family moved to Israel.

At the age of 17 she started studying law and in 1973 she was appointed to be the president of the military court.

In April 1993 Dorner became a judge in the supreme court. She was identified as a protector of human rights.

Dalia Dorner is one of the most influential women in Israel. One of her cases led to real change in the meaning of child labour. The case was about a child who sued his father because he didn’t love him enough. Dalia Dorner accepted his claim and the father was punished and sent to jail. Dorner became an important leader of the fight for children's rights.

Dorner retired from the Supreme Court on March 3, 2004. In August 2006, she was appointed president of the Israeli Press Council. She teaches human rights at the Bar-Ilan University law faculty. She holds Honorary Doctorates from the Weizmann Institute of Science (2005), and from the Ben-Gurion University of the Negev (2008). She is an honorary member of the American Law Institute.
