Plot Synopsis This book focuses mainly on the two youngest Glasses, Franny, an actress and college student, and Zooey, a highly successful actor. Franny:  Franny opens with Franny meeting her boyfriend Lane Coutell at his school Yale, for a football game.  Before the game, they go out to a lunch during which Franny begins to have a breakdown, upset by the pho- niness and superiority complexes she believes the entire collegiate world, including Lane, possesses.  During her breakdown, she reveals that she has be- come highly interested in a book called The Way of a Pilgrim, which emphasizes the importance of the “Jesus prayer”  She excuses herself to go to the bathroom, but faints on her way there, still muttering the prayer. 5
