Plot Synopsis
This book focuses mainly on the two youngest Glasses,
Franny, an actress and college student, and Zooey, a
highly successful actor.
Franny:
Franny opens with Franny meeting her boyfriend Lane
Coutell at his school Yale, for a football game.
Before the game, they go out to a lunch during which
Franny begins to have a breakdown, upset by the pho-
niness and superiority complexes she believes the entire
collegiate world, including Lane, possesses.
During her breakdown, she reveals that she has be-
come highly interested in a book called The Way of a
Pilgrim, which emphasizes the importance of the
“Jesus prayer”
She excuses herself to go to the bathroom, but faints
on her way there, still muttering the prayer.
