The New Yorker- Franny and Zooey by J.D. Salinger May 2014 | Page 4

Franny and Zooey  After the publication of The Catcher in the Rye, Salinger focused all of his works on a family of his own making, the Glasses.  The Glasses are composed of the parents Les and Bessie, former vaudeville performers, and their seven children: Seymour, Buddy, Boo Boo, Walter, Waker, Zooey, and Franny.  He first published Franny as a short story in The New Yorker in 1955, followed by Zooey in 1957. They were published together as a book, Franny and Zooey, in 1961.  As children, all of the Glass kids were on a radio talk show called “It’s A Wise Child”, on which they answered all types of questions, gaining celebrity. 4
