A Musical Review:
Mehmed Can Olgaç
TO GO, OR NOT TO GO?
THAT IS THE QUESTION
To pass the bridge or to go out by personal car on a rainy Saturday evening especially for
entertainment is not the easiest thing to do for an Istanbuller. Traffic jam can make you lose two to three
hours of your life. On the day that Robert College was having one of its famous concerts, the day was
Saturday the 8th and it was raining cats and dogs. The main question was: Was the concert good enough
to convince the audience to come to Suna Kırac Hall even in that terrible rainy day?
Those who did bravely survive the journey arrived Suna Kıraç. Inside of the hall, CIP food
stands displaying the colours of rainbow and the sincerest smiles were welcoming the audience who had
came to Suna Kırac after those endless moments in traffic. The food was extremely delicious especially
the cupcakes were almost miraculous. They were a combination of brownie, cream and the chocolate
that dissolves in your mouth and lefts you with a stupefying taste (heavy breathing). Unfortunately, the
food was too expensive that not many people bought them; also the coffee was a total disaster that most
had to pour it into the rubbish bin. At approximately 19.15, they opened the doors and this meant the
starting of the concert’s first and musical part.
The spotlights were on Ms. Hope-Brown inside; there were whispers until she started to speak
with her magnifying English accent in a very low voice. After her classical concert speech, the concert
began. From the beginning till the end, the guests listened professionals. In Erk Şimşek’s piano solo,
Suna Kırac hall turned to the Opéra Garnier. Mrs Halıcıoglu,
the dean of students at RC, says that: “ I came to the concert
with an headache then Erk’s solo cured it.” Afterwards Rada
Ergen took us on a trip to India with her sarod (a classical
Indian music instrument). At last this marvellous trip has
ended in Spain with Mr Olivencia and Su Özer.
In the second part, the dancers performed pretty well
but since the audience’s expectations were all time high after
that first half they seemed a bit less successful than the Rada Nur Ergen & Selim Ergen playing Sarod and Tabla.
musicians. Though there were some fantastic

choreographies as well, such as: “Kafkas Kartalları”.
Kerem Sicimoğlu, a prep student at RC, says that: “Dance part was a bit weaker and it could be more
qualified but they had saved the best one for the last: Kafkas Kartalları performance was really
qualified.”
Overall, it was one of the most elegant concerts that Robert College had this year. “It was
obviously more qualified than the Lise Live!” Deniz Baysal, the music teacher of RC, says, “It is better
because only the most talented and the most successful musicians can play in this concert.” In the end,
concert had some flaws since the musicians and the dancers were just students. Though everybody
seemed to satisfy with the concert and forgot about the Istanbul’s traffic just in time to once again face
the hell.
