WHAT SO NOT
Don ’ t this shit make a nigga wanna …
What So Not are Harley Streten ( Flume ) and Chris Emerson ( Emoh Instead ). Together , the pair combines styles from different kinds of music they are particularly into , resulting in a huge , genre-defying sound that gets up in your ear canal and refuses to leave .
Having begun the venture by meeting through mutual friends , and thus discovering a mutual love of music , the duo began remixing and writing original tracks under the moniker What So Not . They started to achieve a steady following , but it was somewhat background noise compared to the success Streten ( Flume ) was enjoying in his own solo project at the time . That is , until their remix of Major Lazer ’ s Get Free was heard by Diplo himself , and proceeded to be released on his label and played at his own shows . Having the track come in at number 6 on Triple J ’ s Hottest Hundred last year further elevated the pair ’ s status and so all eyes were on the release of The Quack , having dropped around a week ago .
Both The Quack and High You Are , the two songs on the release , are perfect examples of WSN ’ s ever evolving style and ability to pump out party beats . Also of note are the vocal mixes , put out in accompaniment to the club dubs . Probably one of my favourite songs at the moment being New York ’ s Action Bronson featuring on The Quack , spitting with an audacious gangsta air on top of an already solid beat . Examining their current situation , the sky is the limit for WSN and personally I can ’ t wait for whatever they come up with next .
What So Not are currently touring The Quack EP around the country , and are set to drop in at Flinders Social on the 6th of July .

Metal and Kebabs
Well July is upon us which means the countdown to Terrorfest has begun . This event has been the love child of one of my NT mates Nico Liengme since he created “ Top End Terror ” in 2009 . After hosting a number of successful shows in Darwin with zero deaths , it had become apparent that this mayhem needed to branch out . Townsville had the goods to host such chaos and the call was answered . This event will feature 14 bands over 11 hours with acts such as Blunt Force Trauma , Miazma , Before The Harvest , Dreamkillers , Ire and Ghost Of Black River . I ’ m also trying to get kebabs sold at this thing , who would ’ ve guessed ?
While I was stumbling through the dark realm of the internet , dodging cat photos and checking out the bands travelling to this event I came across something I never expected , “ Sanguinary Misanthropia ”. This no nonsense black metal outfit released a very fine album called “ Loathe Over Will ” through a German label . When I contacted one of the members I was very surprised to find he was an old resident of Townsville , he also wished to send a box of merchandise forward to hand out among local metal fans free of charge . The box I received in the mail later that week was so full of win and free of Anthrax that I found myself repeating words of profanity in disbelief . I believe this show is going to go nuts .
To get your tickets to Terrorfest , jump on Facebook and find “ Townsville Metal United ”. Look for the link to Terrorfest and save yourself some cash by booking online .

Palm Creek Folk Festival – 2013
For those of you who went to Palm Creek this year , you don ’ t need to hear from me how wonderful it was . For those of you who didn ’ t go , well it ’ s probably because you missed out on tickets ( first time EVER sold out prior to the event in technically 22 years ), in which case you probably don ’ t want to hear how wonderful it was . But I ’ ll tell you anyway ….. There ’ s so much frivolity happening , I wish I could morph into separate beings and be everywhere at once . But I haven ’ t mastered morphing yet , so choices had to be made . After ‘ you tubing ’ as many acts as I could prior to the event , I narrowed down my ‘ must see ’ list .
Siskin River , favourites from last year , did not disappoint . Busting out some familiar tunes , and some new favourites , I was already satisfied . Tullara hammered her guitar like no tomorrow , and Shalane bought joy to my ears with her charming vocals . Richard Perso was a luscious surprise . I ’ m always enticed by a set up with 3 didgeridoos . If that voice could go any lower , pretty sure there ’ d be a reading on the Richter scale . Palm Creek , I believe , was his 100th festival , and at 22 years old , pretty sure this won ’ t be the last we hear of this impressive talent . Nicky Bomba and his Bustamento ensemble had my inner Tigger bouncing all the way into next week !
Dana Lyons , Rusty Datsuns , Totally Gordgeous , Woodenbong Fire Tribe … Oh My ! The ridiculously entertaining , talented list goes on … and I haven ’ t even touched on the various other stalls and activities on offer … Laughing Yoga anyone ? Hell Yeahhhha ha ha ha ha !! There aren ’ t the right words in the English language to describe the feelings or emotions the Palm Creek atmosphere creates in this avid attendee . All I can say is this ; get your name on the email list , get your tickets early , and I ’ ll see you in festival heaven next year !
