There’s no place quite like a classic movie theater. The neon glow of a bright
marquee lighting up a downtown street. Colorful terrazzo paving beckoning
you toward the front door. The smell of fresh popcorn and the sounds of
a Wurlitzer pipe organ filling the air. Plush velvet seats beneath a soaring
auditorium ceiling. The curtains draw, and the show begins .

For decades, the downtowns of almost every city from San Jose to San
Francisco featured at least one movie theater. Some still evoke the glory
of their heyday: The Fox Theatre in Redwood City, the Stanford Theatre in
Palo Alto, the California Theatre in San Jose. Others still stand, but have been
stripped of their ornate architecture and iconic signage, like our very own
Mtn. View Theatre at 226 Castro Street. Still others have been completely
lost to time, such as the Santa Clara Theatre, which, like all of Downtown
Santa Clara, was demolished in the 1960s.
At our winter event, we invite you to join us as
Gary Lee Parks, author of Theatres of San Jose
and coauthor of Theatres of the San Francisco
Peninsula, shares the story of our local movie theater
buildings. Mr. Parks has assisted in the preservation of
historic Bay Area theaters as both a professional and a
volunteer. His slideshow lecture well draw the curtains
back and reveal the fascinating stories behind these
iconic buildings. And yes, there will be popcorn! Hope to
see you there!
