Mtn. View Memories with John O’ Halloran
By Nick Perry MVHA Newsletter Editor
From Member John O’ Halloran: Scrapbook chronicling Mr. O’ Halloran’ s career as Mountain View city manager from 1958 to 1973.
From Nick Perry, Newsletter Editor: St. Francis High School 60th anniversary commemorative publication. Souvenir( possibly gift to customers) from J. H. Mockbee Plumbing: metal drain cover / strainer stamped with company name. This could be a hair trap for the bathtub, or a strainer for the kitchen sink; either way, it’ s an interesting piece( and a wonder it has survived.)
From Lisa Garcia, Director-at-Large: Los Altos High School commemorative mug with 1980s Los Altos Eagles logo.*
* Editor’ s Note: We plan on adding the Los Altos Eagles mug to the History Center’ s exhibit on Mtn. View’ s high school campuses. Next year’ s class of 2017 will be the 35th class at Los Altos High where the student body is 50 / 50 Mtn. View and Los Altos residents, sharing old Mtn. View High’ s blue and gray colors and eagle mascot. Time flies for the eagles!

Former City Manager John O’ Halloran at his home in Grass Valley, CA
On May 14, MVHA member John O’ Halloran welcomed me and audio documentarian David Boyer to his home in Grass Valley, CA, to share memories of his long career as Mountain View’ s city manager( 1958 to 1973). During his tenure, Mountain View added over 20,000 new residents! Mr. O’ Halloran had plenty of insight and fascinating stories to share from this formative time in the city’ s history.
I’ m currently working on transcribing the interview into an oral history document that will be housed at the History Center. Keep an eye out for excerpts in a future newsletter!
We are excited to share the news that current Mountain View High School history teacher, Frank Navarro, is writing a history of Mountain View and Awalt high schools. Mr. Navarro has conducted extensive research on the history of public high schools in Mountain View, but he is looking to fill a few gaps in his research by talking to MVHS and / or Awalt alumni, specifically alumni who:
• Attended MVHS during World War II
• Women who played high school sports, 1970 – 1980
If you or someone you know fits in either of the above categories, please call Mr. Navarro at( 510) 299-7163.
Do you have Mtn. View memories you would like to share with the MVHA? Contact us to set up an interview! Send an e-mail to info @ mountainviewhistorical. org or call( 650) 903-6890.
