President’s
Message
By Candace Bowers
MVHA President
Since you are probably wondering why my name appears in
this byline instead of that of Pat Figueroa, I will tell you with
mixed feelings that I have taken on Pat’s role as president of
our association, as Pat needs to end her term early, rather
than at the end of the year. While I am happy to step into this
position, I will certainly miss Pat and her dedication to all
things Mountain View. The Board and I are so grateful to her
for all she has done for the Association and for our city.

You might know me from the library and/or the Mountain
View History Center. I’ve been with the library for 26 years,
first as the bookmobile driver and now as a librarian in the
adult services department. I also staff the History Center
on Tuesdays. Having driven the bookmobile through the
neighborhoods of Mountain View for four years, I often
feel that there’s not a single street name I don’t know. I am
occasionally proven wrong, though, by a visitor to the History
Center who stumps me with a question—I am constantly
learning something new from our residents.
I’m also hoping to meet more of you at our Spring Event
on May 1, where we’ll host a program about Mayfield, the
town AND the mall. We’ll be welcoming Steve Staiger from
the Palo Alto Historical Association, as well as our own Nick
Perry. August brings our famous summer BBQ, featuring
those beloved Parisian burgers. For our fall event, we’re
planning a celebration of Mountain View’s Mexican-American
heritage. You can also spot us at the annual downtown parade
on Saturday, April 23, (appropriately) in one of our board
member’s vintage automobiles.
Finally, I would like to share the good news that the Friends of
the Immigrant House has indeed received the much-needed
funding for the Immigrant House restoration project, from the
County’s Historical Heritage Commission, in response to their
grant request. The house’s future location at 771. N. Rengstorff
Ave. will offer the community a new city park with a historic
connection—a win/win for all!
See you at the Adobe!—Candace
