News & Notes President’s Message By Nicholas Perry This newsletter is published four times a year by the MVHA President MOUNTAIN VIEW HISTORICAL ASSOCIATION P.O. If this venerable structure’s old adobe- brick walls could talk, they’d tell stories of World War II servicemen getting some much needed R&R before deployment, joyous wedding celebrations, numerous fraternal club and non-pro it meetings (like ours!), birthday parties, anniversaries, classes, dances, and more. Chances are if you’ve lived in Mountain View long enough, you have at least one memory inside the historic Adobe. The snapshots above capture a few from my own family’s history. Pictured on the left is my grandparents’ surprise 25th anniversary celebration in 1973. It captures the moment they walked into the Adobe and the joyous look of surprise on their faces as they were greeted by dozens of family members and friends. The photo in the center shows them again at the Adobe, this time at my uncle’s wedding, walking him down the aisle in the Adobe’s garden. And the photo on the right shows my grandma and her brother at the MVHA’s Summer BBQ in 2014, the last of many events she attended at the building. I treasure the happy memories I’ve made in the Adobe and I hope you’ll join me to make some more as we pay tribute to the building’s historic role as the “Eagle Shack” at our Sunday, October 6 event and membership meeting. For the generation of Mountain View High School alumni who lived here in the 1940s and 1950s, the Adobe is still fondly remembered as the Eagle Shack, where teens from the city and surrounding countryside gathered on Saturday nights for live music and dancing. Our “Back to the Eagle Shack” event will be a tribute to that era with a special focus on the spirit and history of old Mountain View High. And while we hope a large “ lock” of Mountain View High Eagle alumni will join us as part of the larger “All Eagle” annual reunion weekend*, this event is open to all and free to our members. So whether you were a Mtn. View/Awalt Spartan, a Los Altos Eagle, a St. Francis Lancer, (like me!) or graduated from another alma mater, I encourage you to muster some old school spirit and come to the Adobe for what is sure to be a memorable afternoon of music, dance, food and fun.
