History Center Update
By Candace Bowers MVHA President
The Mountain View History Center is delighted to have received the donation of Barbara McPheeters Kinchen’ s personal local history archives. Not only did Barbara work in the History Center for many years, but she did much research on her own. We are now able to add all the volumes of her research to our collection.
Antoinette Barrientos has generously donated her files on Filipino-American history in Mountain View. In the 1970s, she was part of a team that interviewed members of this community for an oral history project. We will now have these transcripts and photographs available for the public to view. We hope to digitize the audiotapes of the interviews.

Mtn. View’ s 115th!
By Nick Perry MVHA Vice President
Mountain View was founded in the 1850s, but it wasn’ t until November 7, 1902, that the townspeople voted to incorporate as a city. For those of us who were around Mountain View in 2002, it’ s probably hard to believe it’ s already been 15 years since the big year-long Centennial Celebration that took place that year. Although no formal celebrations are currently planned for the 115th, we hope you’ ll join us in raising a glass to toast the City of Mountain View on November 7. Happy birthday, Mountain View!
MVHA Board Updates
By Nick Perry MVHA Vice President
A few miscellaneous updates from the last MVHA Board of Directors Meeting:
• Board Changes. John Cortez, Director-at- Large, agreed to take on the role of Newsletter Committee Chair from Cynthia Hanson. Cynthia will remain on the Newsletter Committee as copy editor. Allison Hicks, a long-time resident of Old Mountain View and an active member of the group Livable Mountain View was voted into John’ s vacated Director-at-Large position.
• Barbara Kinchen Memorial Plaque. The Board selected a photo and text for a plaque honoring the late Barbara Kinchen, to be installed near the Mountain View History Center entry. The Board is in the process of getting quotes and approvals for manufacturing and installation. The proposed wording of the plaque is:
In memory of Barbara McPheeters Kinchen June 20, 1920 – January 1, 2017
Mountain View’ s first official city historian, honored member and board member of the Mountain View Historical Association, and dedicated library volunteer.“ Bobby” was the face of the Mountain View History Center for decades. Her knowledge of our city’ s history and her passion for sharing it with the community epitomized the spirit and mission of this room.
• 938 – 954 Villa Street. The Board voted to support efforts to preserve the two historic structures currently home to Chez TJ and the Tied House, which are threatened with demolition by new office building development. The Board will continue to monitor the development proposal. MVHA members interested in getting involved with efforts to preserve the two historic structures can visit the Livable Mountain View website at: www. livablemountainview. org
