• Reporting child abuse can be scary , but if you are a witness to or a victim of child abuse , there is a huge benefit to making the report yourself . Being able to tell your story first-hand gives the child care worker much better information than if it came from someone not involved .
• Our counselors are available to talk through child abuse situations if you have questions or need additional support . We can also help research additional resources that may be available to you .
Story and Mission
The Child Advocacy Center is the Mobile community response for coordinating services and interventions in the allegations of child sexual and / or severe physical abuse .
The Child Advocacy Center of Mobile was formed in 1985 as a nonprofit by concerned citizens and professionals to deal with the problem of the sexual abuse and severe physical abuse of children in our community . The doors to our facility opened in 1988 and have remained open due to the generosity of our community . It is truly a collaborative effort of local government , medical , mental health , educational , social service and law enforcement agencies . We provide services from the discovery of the abuse through recovery .
The services provided by the Child Advocacy Center are provided under one roof , which is one of only a few places in the country to do so . Professionals from the CAC itself along with professionals from the Mobile Police Department , Prichard Police Department , Mobile County Sheriff ’ s Office , Mobile County District Attorney , Mobile County Department of Human Resources , Lifelines Counseling and the University of South Alabama Department of Pediatrics provide an extensive array of services . This coordinated service delivery allows for coordinated interviews from specially trained members of the team , therapy for both the child and non-offending family members , and documentation and evidence for prosecution , as well as continuing training for our partners .
While the Child Advocacy Center will be visited by children over 1,100 times per year , we know we only reach a small percentage of those in need . National studies indicate that 25 % of girls and 20 % of boys will be sexually abused before age 18 , yet only 10 % of them report the abuse . We want to serve more children and end the cycle of abuse . We can only do it with your help . Over 70 % of our funding comes from individuals and businesses that value the work that we do .

• This program helps families establish paternity ( when necessary ), obtain court orders for payment of child support , and secure compliance with child support court orders .
• Women and their children fall into poverty or into deeper poverty because the father pays little or nothing for the financial support of his children . Many of these men cannot afford to pay much , but they should pay something – the entire burden should not fall on the mother . A court order forces them to pay something or else possibly face jail .
• DHR can help the mother get a court order . A woman does not have to be a client of DHR in order to get help . All of these services are free .
