The Gospels of Henry The Lion
This collection of 50 full-page illustrations, was intended by Henry
the Lion, Duke of Saxony, for the altar of the Virgin Mary in the
church of St. Blaise's Abbey, Brunswick. The volume is considered
to be a masterpiece of Romanesque book illumination of the 12th
century. This collection was purchased by a German collective
including the German government in 1983 for $11.7 million. The
illustrations were made by the artist Monk Herimann.
