TMS Change Page 55 Help Make Change! Engineering World Health is a non-profit organization focused on improving the quality of medical equipment in developing countries, through efforts from dedicated volunteers with expertise in the biomedical field. We currently have programs benefiting hospitals and patients in Sub-Saharan Africa, Central America, and Southeast Asia. There are many ways that students, professionals, and instructors can get involved. Medical technology designed for a U.S. hospital setting might not be appropriate in a location with decreased infrastructure, unreliable power, and limited access to spare parts and consumables. EWH Chapters are organized to work on design of new medical technologies that are appropriate for the developing world setting and to build technologies these devices through the EWH Kits program. EWH Chapters are typically made up of a group of students working with instructors and/or professionals as mentors. Instructors and professional technicians and engineers can also work with EWH through the BMET Training Program. In this initiative, EWH travels to train BMETs in a classroom setting in their home countries so that they have the capacity to improve medical technology in the public and charity hospitals they work at. We have travel opportunities for volunteer instructors to teach these classes, and are currently training in Rwanda and Honduras with programs to begin soon in Cambodia and Ghana. For more information about any of these programs or opportunities, please contact Justin Cooper, BMET Manager for Honduras, at [email protected]
