A third example involves a little bit of networking. Most high fidelity patient simulators include a feature that allows the trainer or instructor to
communicate with the clinician via a voice conferencing system that
works by use of a headset that plugs into the Instructor PC. In this case,
the voice conferencing system was malfunctioning in a way that first, the
voice conference was being detected by the wrong manikin, and second,
the voice and hearing was coming back with a high pitched squeal. This
particular situation had the lab technicians and instructors stumped. After
a bit of troubleshooting, it was discovered that to correct the first problem
of the voice coming out of the wrong system, we needed to reconfigure
the IP addresses that were designated to that particular network. Once
that was corrected, it was just a simple matter of updating the drivers for
the voice conferencing system. Of course it seems something like this
would be a simple and easy situation to resolve, but of course we have
procedures that we must follow to ensure that the job is done properly
