Meet your neighbourhood's friendly foldie

The commuting composer

Musician Ng Chor Guan's parents bought him his first folding bike and he's never looked back ever since..

NG Chor Guan is a man who needs no introduction.

The composer is well-known for riding a foldie to work everyday and is a well-respected individual in the circle of folding bike enthusiasts.

With more than 10,000km on his Brompton P6R folding bike, the Klang-born foldie attributed his bicycling experience to his tertiary education exposure in London, England.

"I see people commuting with folding bicycles and its also an economical way to get around as taxis and buses can be expensive," he recalled.

It wasn't until 2010 when his parents gave him a Polygon Urbano folding bike redeemed from a credit card loyalty point programme where Guan had realised the practical use of a bicycle that folds.

He added that a trip with a group of other cyclists who rode the same class of bike as his had inspired him to do more research on the different kinds of folding bicycles.

"I joined a group who cycled up Fraser's Hill in Pahang.

"But, I didn't make the cut because I wasn't fit enough. I was truly disappointed."

Ng said he trained and later purchased a Rallyart F1-18 folding bike and gained more experience in riding medium and long-distance courses.

"I was interested in a Brompton because I love its compact size and how it folds.

"But, just when I was getting good at the Rallyart bike, I got offered a scholarship to study music in Germany. It was there where I had decided to go for a Brommie which I purchased in London for RM4,000," he explained.

From London in March 2011, Ng rode to Bonn in Germany. He had experienced bikepacking for the firstime and was struck with wanderlust.
