Hospitals striving to demonstrate their commitment to quality care often prioritize obtaining certifications and accreditations that recognize their superior outcomes . Many hospitals seek Magnet Recognition ® to demonstrate their facility ’ s level of nursing excellence . Awarded by the American Nurses Credentialing Center ( ANCC ), Magnet ® recognized hospitals are known as prestigious places of employment that invest significant time and resources in their facilities , patients , and staff .
What Qualifies a Hospital for Magnet Recognition ® ?
The Magnet Recognition Program ® is a global designation program that provides a roadmap to quality nursing . The program acknowledges excellence in healthcare organizations where , “ Nursing leaders successfully align their nursing strategic goals to improve the organization ’ s patient outcomes ” ( ANCC , 2021 ).
Although the Magnet Recognition Program ® was not a formal designation until the mid-nineties , the American Academy of Nursing ( AAN ) began studying organizations ’ work environments a decade earlier , beginning with a 1983 study conducted by AAN Task Force on Nursing Practice in Hospitals . The goal of the initial study was to identify work environments that “ attract and retain wellqualified nurses who promote quality patient , resident and client care ” ( ANCC , 2021 ).
