Art and landscape
profiles : they are I giocolieri dell ’ armonia ( The Jugglers of Harmony ), by Giuseppe Gallo . In short , this is what Hypermaremma is all about : an art festival that brings sculptures and installations to this splendid portion of Tuscany for a few months every year . “ The artists are invited ,” says Pratis , “ to rethink a place and to trigger a new dialogue with it . We decide which artist to invite on the basis of the landscape . We almost never do the opposite .”
“
Public art is always there for everyone to enjoy . And sometimes it becomes a landscape
”
The premise , with a few small exceptions that prove the rule , is that the works , which can be monumental in scale , are all designed specifically for Hypermaremma , and even if you want to collaborate with a particular artist , you always start from the search for the right place . The key word is “ transversal ”: there is no shortage of famous names in the catalogue , but you will also encounter very young artists or rediscover forgotten experiences : “ A way to look at the area from different points of view .” The creators ’ viewpoint is an emotional one and is at the basis of everything : “ Giorgio , Matteo and I grew up in Maremma , we spent our summers there . So we also wanted to do something in a place we loved , while trying to take our work as gallery owners to a different dimension .” Mission accomplished , judging by the results of these four years , but above all to be continued : “ Dialogue with the local area is fundamental ,” Pratis is convinced , “ and dealing with public art means taking on greater responsibilities , including in terms of immediacy .”
“
The dream , that gradually comes true , is that Hypermaremma becomes more and more open-air museum
”
Public art is always there for everyone to enjoy . And sometimes it becomes a landscape , as was the case with Totem , the gigantic Goldrake fist created by Moira Ricci amidst the hills opposite Talamone ; or Spazio Amato ( Beloved Space ), the luminous work by Massimo Uberti that lights up every night and is also visible to those travelling through by train , in the WWF reserve of Lake Burano . The dream , which is gradually coming true , is precisely this : that some of the installations should remain and Hypermaremma should become more and more of an open-air museum , art in tune with the landscape which changes it at the same time . Then there are the meetings , the music , the events , the parties , the important end-of-exhibition auctions sometimes managed by Christie ’ s , other times by Sotheby ’ s . You can find everything you need to know at www . hypermaremma . com , including ways to support the festival . But wandering around the Maremma and coming across some of the works , or specifically seeking them out , is an unparalleled experience . And it tells us , in its primarily visual language , that we are all art , landscape , ecosystem .
